Execution Methods in the United States

Evergreen hub for the principal execution methods used or authorized in U.S. capital punishment, linking method history to botched executions, protocols, prisons and court cases.

The modern American death penalty is not built around a single execution technology. States and the federal government have moved through a succession of methods—hanging, electrocution, lethal gas, lethal injection, firing squad and, most recently, nitrogen hypoxia—often adopting a new method after the previous one became controversial, legally vulnerable or operationally difficult.

The six method nodes

– Lethal Injection as an Execution Method — the dominant modern method, but also the method most frequently represented in the current botched-execution cluster. – Electrocution and the Electric Chair — introduced in the late nineteenth century and retained today as an alternative in several states. – Gas Chamber Execution — the traditional cyanide-gas method, last used in the United States in 1999. – Firing Squad as an Execution Method — historically rare, but revived in modern statutes and used again in South Carolina in 2025; Idaho made it its primary method in 2026. – Hanging as an Execution Method — the historic baseline method, now surviving only in narrow legal circumstances. – Nitrogen Hypoxia as an Execution Method — the newest method to enter active U.S. use, with Alabama and Louisiana carrying out nitrogen-gas executions.

Why methods keep changing

Execution technology has repeatedly been sold as a solution to the problems of the method that came before it. Electrocution was promoted as an improvement over hanging. Gas was introduced as another supposedly modern alternative. Lethal injection later displaced the visibly violent methods and became standard. Drug shortages, failed IV access and litigation then pushed some states toward firing squads and nitrogen hypoxia.

Current 2026 picture

Lethal injection remains authorized across U.S. death-penalty jurisdictions, but many states retain alternatives. Electrocution and lethal gas remain in some statutes. Firing squad is authorized in five states, with Idaho making it the primary method in July 2026. Five states specifically authorize nitrogen-gas execution, and Alabama and Louisiana have carried it out.

The legal picture is state-specific and changes over time, so individual method pages carry the current statutory context while event pages preserve what happened in a particular execution.

Next layer

With the method layer in place, the next expansion is prisons and execution facilities. Each major execution event can then connect simultaneously to the person, the method, the facility, the state protocol and—where relevant—the court case that shaped the procedure.
