Masaru Takumi was one of the most powerful figures inside Yamaguchi-gumi during the fifth-generation era.
He founded Takumi-gumi and rose to the post of wakagashira, the senior executive position immediately below the boss in the syndicate hierarchy.
That made him a natural succession figure.
It also made his enemies extremely dangerous.
Rise under Yoshinori Watanabe
Takumi became especially important during the leadership of fifth-generation boss Yoshinori Watanabe.
Yamaguchi-gumi had emerged from the Yama-Ichi War and entered a period of renewed consolidation.
Inside that structure, Takumi became one of the men responsible for translating the boss’s authority into everyday organizational control.
Takumi-gumi
His own organization, Takumi-gumi, became an important affiliate.
This is a recurring pattern in yakuza hierarchy.
Senior executives do not cease to have their own organizational bases when they rise inside a larger federation. Their personal power is often inseparable from the strength of their affiliate.
That is why Takumi-gumi must exist as a separate canonical organization page rather than being folded into the biography.
Assassination in 1997
Takumi was assassinated in 1997.
The killing became one of the most notorious internal shocks of the post-Yama-Ichi period.
A civilian bystander, Hiroshi Hirai, was also killed.
That detail matters because it prevents the incident from being framed merely as an internal gang dispute. The violence reached beyond the participants.
Internal consequences
Takumi’s death removed one of the strongest figures in the succession landscape.
It also intensified scrutiny of internal Yamaguchi-gumi rivalries.
The event belongs in the same broad family of stories as the murder of Masahisa Takenaka: violence against a figure near the top of the hierarchy can reshape the entire organization.

Timeline and case connections
The Master record keeps events separate from general biography so arrests, convictions, organizational changes, killings and other milestones can be updated without rewriting unrelated parts of the page.
Status and record
The current structured life-status field is unknown. This administrative field should change only when a reliable current source supports an update.
Evidence and editorial boundaries
The profile is designed as a historical research node rather than a collection of unsourced anecdotes. Where evidence is strongest on an organization, prosecution or event rather than private biographical details, the page stays focused on that documented record.
