Christa Pike

Tennessee death-row prisoner convicted of the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer who survived a September 30, 2026 lethal-injection execution attempt after the state administered its pentobarbital protocol.

Christa Gail Pike is a Tennessee death-row prisoner whose case became historically unusual on September 30, 2026, when the state attempted to execute her by lethal injection and she survived. The event was not simply an abandoned execution caused by an inability to obtain intravenous access. Tennessee officials proceeded with the state protocol and Pike received the execution drug, yet remained alive and ultimately was transported to a hospital.

The Colleen Slemmer murder

Pike was convicted of first-degree murder for the January 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. Tennessee Department of Correction records identify Pike as the only woman on the state’s death row and state that she entered the women’s prison system in March 1996 after receiving a death sentence.

Nearly three decades on death row

Pike spent about thirty years under a death sentence before the state set a 2026 execution date. Tennessee had revised its lethal-injection procedure in December 2024 around a single drug, pentobarbital, and resumed executions in 2025. The state had already encountered serious IV-access problems in another 2026 execution attempt involving Tony Von Carruthers, which was called off when a required backup line could not be established.

Pike’s attorneys argued before her execution that her medical history created unusual risks for IV access. Those warnings later became a major part of the dispute over what happened inside the execution chamber.

September 30, 2026

At Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, execution personnel administered Tennessee’s lethal-injection procedure. The Tennessee Department of Correction later stated that every step allowed by its established protocol had been carried out and that the protocol did not authorize further procedures. Pike nevertheless remained alive and was transferred to an off-site medical facility.

Associated Press witnesses described a prolonged execution in which Pike remained alive well after the drug administration. Subsequent reporting said she required intensive medical treatment, including ventilation, and suffered significant injuries involving her arms. By October 7, her attorneys said she had regained consciousness and was speaking.

The event appears to be the first known modern U.S. case in which a condemned prisoner survived after the lethal-injection drug itself had actually been administered during the execution attempt. Earlier failed executions usually involved mechanical failure, inability to establish IV access, or procedures halted before the lethal drugs were fully delivered.

What happens next

Pike’s death sentence did not automatically disappear because the execution failed. The unresolved question is whether Tennessee will ever seek a second attempt and, if it does, what constitutional challenges will follow. Her lawyers have argued that another execution could violate the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

The closest famous historical comparison is Willie Francis, who survived a failed electric-chair execution in Louisiana in 1946. The U.S. Supreme Court later allowed Louisiana to try again. Francis was executed in 1947. Pike’s situation is materially different because Tennessee proceeded with drug administration and because the alleged physical injuries from the first attempt may become central to any later litigation.
