Why this person matters

This profile expands the archive’s UK organized-crime knowledge graph with a person-level node grounded in court records, contemporary reporting and reputable retrospective reporting. Convictions are stated as convictions; allegations and broader underworld reputations are attributed rather than presented as judicial findings.

Criminal record and documented activity

Reggie Kray and his twin brother Ronnie led the East London criminal group widely known as the Firm. The brothers cultivated nightclub and celebrity connections, but their lasting historical significance rests on the violence, intimidation and murder cases that ultimately broke the organization.

Reggie’s central murder conviction concerned Jack “the Hat” McVitie, who was killed in a Stoke Newington flat in October 1967. At the 1969 Old Bailey trial Reggie was convicted of McVitie’s murder and also of being an accessory after the fact to the murder of George Cornell.

The same trial convicted Ronnie Kray of both the Cornell and McVitie murders. The twins received life sentences with a minimum recommendation of thirty years, effectively ending the Krays’ command of the London underworld.

After more than three decades in prison, Reggie developed terminal cancer. He was released on compassionate grounds in 2000 and died weeks later.

Within the archive, Reggie should function as a bridge between the Firm, the McVitie murder, the Cornell case, the 1969 trial and the broader 1960s London gangland cluster.

Evidence and editorial boundaries

The profile is designed as a historical research node rather than a collection of unsourced anecdotes. Where evidence is strongest on an organization, prosecution or event rather than private biographical details, the page stays focused on that documented record.

Source record

The current Master package attaches the following sources to this profile: – DPP case files listed in October 2008 disclosure log: Ronald and Reginald Kray and associates — The National Archives (UK), Tier 1. – Krays and six others convicted — The Guardian, Tier 2. – Kray dies after 35 days of freedom — The Guardian, Tier 2. – Leonard ‘Nipper’ Read: Detective who brought the Krays to justice — The Independent, Tier 2.

Source entries establish the claims for which they are cited; their presence does not mean every source supports every sentence. Structured references are retained so later audits can trace claims back to evidence.
