Editorial status

This the archive profile distinguishes convictions and court findings from allegations, media descriptions, self-admissions and underworld folklore. Cross-links indicate documented relationships or clearly labeled editorial context; they do not automatically imply joint criminal conduct.

A Richardson Gang figure

Cornell, born George Myers, became associated with the Richardson organization in south London. Accounts of the period place him among the men around Charlie and Eddie Richardson during the escalating conflict between the south London group and the Kray twins’ Firm.

The feud around Mr Smith’s

The Richardson–Kray rivalry was already violent before Cornell’s death. The fight and shooting at Mr Smith’s club in Catford in March 1966 left Kray associate Richard 'Dickie' Hart dead and several others wounded. Cornell’s name became inseparable from the tension that followed.

The Blind Beggar shooting

On the evening of 9 March 1966 Cornell was drinking at the Blind Beggar in Whitechapel. Ronnie Kray entered with Ian Barrie. Cornell was shot in the head and died in hospital in the early hours of 10 March. The public setting, the fear surrounding witnesses and the notoriety of the Krays made the killing one of the most famous episodes in British organized-crime history.

The murder case that reached the Old Bailey

Ronnie Kray was ultimately convicted of Cornell’s murder in 1969. Ian Barrie was also convicted in connection with the killing, while Reggie Kray was convicted as an accessory after the fact. The case therefore forms a direct graph bridge between Cornell, both Kray twins, Barrie, the Richardson Gang, the Blind Beggar and the Old Bailey trial.

Why Cornell matters to the knowledge graph

Cornell is more than a victim node. His profile explains how rival organizations, places and individual murders overlap. Any the archive treatment of the Krays or Richardsons is incomplete without a canonical Cornell page because so many other entities should reverse-link to this murder.
