Massey had served as a soldier before being sent with troops to a Royal African Company settlement on the Gambia River. Poor conditions and tensions developed between soldiers, company officials and the crew of the Gambia Castle. George Lowther, the ship's second mate, was also in conflict with his superiors.

In 1721 the crisis became a seizure of the vessel. Massey and soldiers under his command joined Lowther and dissatisfied crewmen. The Gambia Castle departed without its captain and became the basis for a pirate enterprise. Modern archival research confirms Massey's deep involvement, even though surviving accounts differ over the precise balance of command.

Massey's pirate career was relatively short. He eventually returned toward Britain, was arrested, prosecuted for piracy and hanged in 1723. His case is useful because it shows piracy emerging from a breakdown inside imperial commercial and military structures rather than from an external pirate attack alone.

Massey creates a second central actor for the Gambia Castle seizure alongside George Lowther and opens later routes to the Royal African Company, piracy trials, military discipline and shipboard mutiny.

This structure also protects future cross-linking. New articles can point to one canonical ID instead of repeating free-text names, and reverse links can be generated without changing the meaning of the original event. Media remains separately gated: no AI reconstruction is used as a substitute for a rights-cleared historical image.
