Zoran Davidović “Ćanda”

c. 1972 — 23 March 2000

Belgrade underworld figure killed with Ivan Stojanović in a highway ambush on 23 March 2000 after returning from Branislav Lainović’s funeral.

Zoran Davidović, known as Ćanda, was a young Belgrade underworld figure whose murder on 23 March 2000 became part of the rapid sequence of assassinations that followed the killing of Željko Ražnatović Arkan. He was only in his late twenties when he and Ivan Stojanović were shot to death in a moving-car ambush near the motorway in Zemun.

Miljakovac and the late-1990s scene

Davidović was associated in reporting with the Miljakovac and Banjica circles of Belgrade. Unlike older figures who had built reputations through Western European robberies in the 1970s and 1980s, Ćanda belonged to a younger generation formed inside the sanctions-era city.

Retrospective accounts describe expensive cars, nightlife and friendships with known underworld figures, but the evidentiary basis for many colorful anecdotes is weak. His the archive profile should therefore distinguish documented associations from later folklore.

Connections to Skole and Lainović

In the period before his death, Davidović was frequently linked in press accounts to Zoran Uskoković “Skole.” He was also close enough to Branislav Lainović “Dugi” to attend Lainović's funeral in Novi Sad in March 2000.

That funeral became the immediate prelude to Davidović's murder. The timing mattered because the underworld was already in a cycle of retaliation. Arkan had been killed in January; Lainović was killed in March; Davidović and Stojanović were killed only days later.

The highway ambush

On 23 March 2000, Davidović and Ivan Stojanović were returning to Belgrade after Lainović's funeral. Vreme's chronology records that they were killed near the entrance to the Zagreb–Belgrade motorway, close to the Grmeč factory area. Attackers opened fire with automatic weapons.

The method — a coordinated vehicle ambush followed by escape — was characteristic of a period in which contract-style killings had become common in Belgrade. As with many cases from the era, the murder remained unresolved in public judicial terms.

The Arkan revenge narrative

Later accounts tried to fit Davidović's death into a wider revenge campaign after Arkan's assassination. Because Davidović was associated with Skole, and because Skole himself was accused in underworld rumor of involvement in the Arkan killing, Davidović was sometimes portrayed as collateral in that conflict.

That may explain how contemporaries interpreted the murder, but it is not the same as a proven motive. the archive should present the revenge theory as a theory, not as an established fact.

Media attention

Davidović also received attention because of his relationship with pop singer Jelena Karleuša. That detail made him more visible to the general public, but it should not dominate the criminal-history profile. His significance to the the archive graph lies primarily in the sequence of killings around Lainović, Skole and the post-Arkan underworld.

Why the profile matters

Ćanda is a useful connector in the site's event-first model. His page links multiple unresolved homicides into a chronological chain: Arkan's assassination → Lainović's murder → Ćanda's ambush → Skole's later killing. Readers following any one of those cases should be able to move naturally into the others.
