Vojislav Raičević

Early leader of Group America who disappeared in 1997; presumed dead, but no body or final judicial finding on his death has been publicly established.

Group AmericaOrganized crime

Vojislav Raičević, better known as Voja Amerikanac, occupies the most important missing-person slot in the early history of Group America. Investigative reporting by OCCRP places him between the New York-centered criminal circle around Boško Radonjić and the more structured cocaine-trafficking organization later led by Mileta Miljanić and Zoran Jakšić.

From the American circle to Belgrade

Raičević’s nickname reflected the transatlantic connections that shaped the group. OCCRP describes him as a younger associate of Radonjić who returned to Belgrade during the 1990s and was placed in charge of the gang. Under Raičević, the network became more disciplined and increasingly oriented toward international cocaine trafficking rather than only the violent street conflicts associated with Belgrade’s underworld.

The public record surrounding Raičević is uneven. Serbian press accounts have attached numerous killings to him, but most of those cases were never resolved in court. the archive therefore does not turn those claims into a list of established murders. They belong in the “reported / unresolved” layer of the knowledge graph.

Disappearance in 1997

Raičević disappeared in 1997. His body was never publicly recovered, and there is no final judgment identifying his killers. OCCRP’s reconstruction relies in part on a detailed police informant account that described his presumed murder as the trigger for a revenge campaign by the organization.

The disappearance is more important than the lurid details that later accumulated around it. It destabilized the leadership of the network, brought his brother Veselin into the revenge narrative, and ultimately preceded the rise of Mileta Miljanić as the group’s dominant figure.

What can be stated safely

Three points are well supported: Raičević was a central early leader of the network later called Group America; he disappeared in 1997 and is presumed dead; and his disappearance became a turning point in the group’s internal history. Claims about precisely who abducted or killed him, how he died, and which earlier killings he personally committed remain unresolved allegations unless tied to a specific adjudicated case.

Legacy

Raičević’s page is the bridge between the archive’s existing 1990s Belgrade cluster and the later transnational cocaine network. It should link to Group America, Mileta Miljanić, Zoran Jakšić, Veselin Raičević and the existing profiles of figures whose deaths or rivalries appear in the broader 1990s conflict narrative, while keeping the legal status of each allegation explicit.
