Milan Radonjić

Milan Radonjić, a former senior official in the Belgrade center of Serbia’s State Security Service, appears in the same historical cluster as the Stambolić and Drašković cases but requires especially careful legal labeling. He was prosecuted over the Budva assassination attempt and later over the murder of journalist Slavko Ćuruvija, yet the final outcomes in both cases were acquittals.

State Security role

Radonjić headed the Belgrade State Security center during a period of intense surveillance of opposition figures and journalists. That institutional position made his actions a recurring subject of later investigations.

Budva prosecution

A first-instance court convicted Radonjić over alleged assistance in preparations for the Budva attempt and imposed an eight-year term. That judgment was overturned. In the retrial, Radonjić, Ratko Romić and Stevan Basta were acquitted. the archive therefore must not display the overturned eight-year term as a current sentence.

Ćuruvija case

Radonjić was later prosecuted with Radomir Marković, Ratko Romić and Miroslav Kurak for the 1999 murder of journalist Slavko Ćuruvija. After years of proceedings and earlier convictions, the Belgrade Court of Appeal finally acquitted all four in the judgment published in February 2024.
