A large federal racketeering prosecution targeting the Avenues gang in Northeast Los Angeles. The 2009 indictment charged dozens of defendants and followed an investigation intensified after the 2008 murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Juan Escalante. Federal court records documented the gang’s relationship with the Mexican Mafia, including collection of extortionate taxes and authorization of violence. Rudy Aguirre Jr. and Carlos Renterria each ultimately received 25-year federal prison terms.
